Install and open
Section titled “Install and open”Nota isn’t signed with a paid Apple or Microsoft certificate yet, so the first time you open it your system asks you to confirm. This happens once.
-
Open the downloaded
.dmgand drag Nota into Applications. -
Open Nota from Applications. macOS stops it with “Nota” Not Opened (older versions: “Nota” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it). Click Done — not Move to Trash.
-
Open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security. Next to “Nota” was blocked to protect your Mac, click Open Anyway, confirm with your password or Touch ID, then click Open Anyway once more.
From now on Nota opens like any other app.
-
Run
Nota-Setup-<version>-x64.exe(or-arm64.exe). -
If SmartScreen shows Windows protected your PC, click More info ▸ Run anyway.
-
Follow the installer. Nota appears in the Start menu.
On Windows, Nota can use WASAPI exclusive mode for the lowest latency — see Settings ▸ Audio.
-
Make the AppImage executable — in a terminal:
Terminal window chmod +x Nota-*.AppImageor tick Allow executing file as program in the file’s Properties ▸ Permissions.
-
Double-click it, or run
./Nota-<version>-x86_64.AppImage.
Nota plays through PulseAudio / ALSA and reads MIDI through ALSA.
Updates
Section titled “Updates”Nota checks for new versions itself. When one is out, the start window shows a banner — click Update, and Nota downloads it, checks it against the release’s checksum, and installs it when you click Restart now (or the next time you quit). After an update, What’s New shows what changed.
What’s next
Section titled “What’s next”- First launch — the start window, What’s New and recovering work.
- The main window — a tour of everything on screen.
- Your first track — from an empty project to an exported WAV.
